History of the Latin Language 2

The course is taught in a two-year cycle and is offered to 2nd and 3rd year students. It provides a survey of Latin historical Grammar (phonology, morphology, syntax). The issues examined include:

1.) The history of the Latin language:
- Latin and Indo-European languages
- Periodization of the Latin language
- The Latin alphabet
- Latin and Romance languages
2.) Phonology
- Indo-European phonological system
- Development of Indo-European phonological system within Latin
- Vowel length and phonological change
- Accent and phonological change in Latin
- Phonological changes concerning Latin consonants

3.) Morphology
- Morphemes in Indo-European languages
- Latin noun morphology
- The morphology of Latin pronouns
- Latin verb morphology

4.) Syntax
This part of the course discusses selected topics concerning Latin syntax, from different theoretical perspectives. The topics include:
noun syntax in Latin
the syntax of impersonal verb forms in Latin
