Students are introduced to the basic tenets of sociolinguistics and selected chapters from this field are dealt with: regional and social dialects, multilingual speech communities, language contact and borrowing, national language and language planning, gender and age, social networks, language change, style and register, politeness and cross-cultural communication, gender and stereotypes.
