The course is designed to familiarize students with particularities and with the most important authors of Spanish and Spanish American poetry from their beginnings till nowadays, with special attention to the 19th and 20th century artistic currents and to the basic theory of poetical language. The course also includes a detailed analysis of a list of prose works.

Spanish poetry:
- characteristics of Spanish lyric from its beginnings to the Golden Era

Romanticism: characteristics; main representatives
20th century:
- Modernism and its relation to poetical tendencies of the European poetry; main representatives
- generations of poets at the transition to the 20th century; the generation of 98, the twentieth-century generation, the generation of 27
- post-war poetry in Spain and in the emmigration
- poetic generation of the 50's
- Nueve novísimos
- contemporary poetry
